the entire sora chase kinda cost openai twice. on the supply side it bled compute & possibly researcher attention from the frontier. & on perception side, it handed anthropic the moral high ground for free by shipping a consumer deepfake product with a feed at the exact moment the labor displacement discourse peaked which effectively signaled less seriousness in many ways esp for business products/customers. you can see the latter in how dario mentions "the slop we've seen with ai video models” explicitly in his latest interview. (i just finished watching the long form dario bloomberg piece).

I've been getting dms from young IG and TT users asking me how to make AI videos. "What app do you use?" I've talked to few of them and they either don't own a laptop, or they rarely use it. According to their profiles most of them are in the US, so it's not strictly an access issue. This is a very small sample size, like 12 conversations or so but it does add to my growing suspicion that younger cohorts are using short form as a stand in for apps. They "prompt" accounts that post AI content to tune the videos closer to what they want in lieu of having model access. They at best use GPT image gen (and previously SORA), the more savvy ones game free tiers from companies like heygen and etc to make their own variations, which they often find lacking.

ARR surpassed $300 million by January. 60 million global users. 600 million videos created. The divergence is striking. OpenAI treated video generation as a showcase. Same prompt, four AI video models tested on a carousel scene. Here is how they compare in scene richness, physics, and camera motion. PixVerse V6 delivers smooth motion, rich scenes, matched audio, and realistic textures. However, its camera remains fixed and does not follow the carousel's rotation. The output also drifts slightly from the prompt, trading strict realism for bold imagination. Great creativity, less precision. Sora 2 Pro offers excellent texture quality and cinematic feel. But it also deviates from the prompt, lacks realism, and suffers from mild camera instability. The shaky camera slightly hurts immersion. Seedance 2.0 performs well in the first half: highly realistic, smooth motion, and solid scene understanding. However, the second half degrades, and the overall consistency is uneven. Still, its best moments are impressive. Seedance 1.0 Lite struggles the most. The output is abstract and barely recognisable as a carousel. It fails to understand the basic prompt, resulting in poor scene richness, broken physics, and erratic camera movement. Each model has trade-offs. PixVerse V6 wins in creativity and audio, Sora 2 Pro leads in texture, Seedance 2.0 shows realistic potential in short bursts, and Seedance 1.0 Lite needs more training.

Like y’all… that AI fruit Love Island series on TikTok has been the most attended to media on the internet over the past week I understand Sora the social media app being shut down bc it had poor product evolution/execution, but I don't understand Sora within ChatGPT going. So much gen Al video comes across people's feeds and (for better or worse) is enjoyed. So is it just the cost? Is it all the copyright headaches? Is it that other platforms are used far more — what company is actually leading when it comes to what people use to generate Al video for social media rn?

March 2024 versus March 2026 It feels like a million years ago, but guys, I remember very clearly when Sora came out and a lot of people in China were basically like: welp, there it is. Definitive proof of US AI dominance, we are cooked. That was Feb. 2024. 25 months later and it's a totally different story Why Sora became the “proof” of US AI dominance: 1/ China really did not have anything close at the time. When Sora dropped, there was no obvious Chinese equivalent in text-to-video. The gap in coherence, physical consistency, and duration felt big enough that people were not just impressed, they were honestly stunned. 2/ It felt like evidence of something deeper. People thought it was like a world model. That interpretation was way too generous, but it was very much the vibe. 3/ It slotted perfectly into the existing US lead narrative. Best labs, best researchers, best compute, best everything. What is there to even fight for? 4/ The timing made it feel even bigger than it was. Early 2024 was so much about chip controls, export restrictions, and a lot of US-China AI anxiety. Sora was kind of treated as evidence that the gap was structural and widening. But now in 2026 and the whole vibe is different. Chinese video models moved fast. Reaaaaally fast. Kling, Hailuo, Vidu, and others closed the gap much faster than a lot of people expected. And of course there's ByteDance Seedance. At minimum, the story is no longer “US far ahead, China nowhere close." (Honestly, look back at some headlines from Spring 2024 and tell me I'm wrong.) But Sora the demo ended up mattering more than Sora the product. The reveal was world-shaping in narrative terms. But in actual market terms, maybe partly because it took OpenAI so uncharacteristically long to launch the product to the public, Chinese alternatives actually did better. So the original “Sora proves US dominance” didn't age well. Sora was great, but people confused demo advantage with durable ecosystem advantage. But hey, that's what people like to do. They love jumping to civilizational conclusions and don't really want to spend time looking deeper at how things really work.

I think OpenAI is overrotating towards businesses I get why they are doing it; the current meta for AI is agents, and agents are primarily to improve productivity Businesses have more things to do than they have time for They’d gladly trade money for time, so paying for productivity gains makes sense Consumers are the opposite; the average consumer is bored and wants to be entertained; trading money for time make no sense to them Most consumers will never pay for a productivity app and so ChatGPT subscriptions are unlikely to reach sufficient scale This is why Anthropic is doing so well as agents have taken over, their core audience are businesses But OpenAI’s moat is their 900M consumers and while businesses are important, I think they should build on their strengths They killed off Sora for cost reasons and they might’ve gotten the form factor wrong but directionally I think they were right The % of AI content in social media is rising and it’s likely the new normal With Sora gone, I bet TikTok or IG ends up getting this right IG ads is one of the best business models out there and they can cover the costs of running a video or image model at scale That brings us back to ads If OpenAI had figured out their ads model a year ago, they wouldn’t be in this predicament of picking between consumers and businesses

A chat with a movie producer friend made me research this (surprised me as I wasnt aware) -OpenAI has shut down its Sora video platform -Sora generated approx $2.1 million in cumulative 6 month lifespan, again as per reports -Sora was reportedly burning through an estimated $15 mn/day in computing and infrastructure costs -Annualized to approximately $5.4 billion in expenses!

I actually miss Sora 2. Not just the video quality. Whatever underlying model it used to rewrite and improve prompts had a genuinely great sense of humor. It understood timing, absurdity, deadpan comedy, visual irony. The stuff it came up with often felt funnier than what I originally asked for. That’s rare in AI. Most models can “write jokes,” but they don’t really have taste. Sora 2 somehow did. I genuinely wonder if OpenAI could bring that comedic taste into ChatGPT’s text and voice models. @sama

I run $3M SaaS and our best performing ads are AI UGC videos using Sora right now. Here's the workflow: 1. Editor made ONE main video promoting our tool with b-rolls 2. I create 10-15s video using Sora for the hook 3. I take that video and clone the voice in elevenlabs 4. I create a voicover and use it over the main video from the editor 5. I got access to Sora 2 today and have been playing around a bunch. Initial thoughts: 1. The Cameo feature is amazing and super fun — really good character consistency. Not quite nano banana level, but maybe 80% of the way there. 2. Most videos I’ve seen aren’t actually engaging (yet). TikToks and Reels are much more engaging because they’re longer, better edited, and way more polished. Plus there’s not a ton of content there on Sora yet for the algo to feed you from. 3. Production-grade editing (good cuts, subtitles, hooks, etc) is a key missing ingredient currently. I suspect OpenAI will release really good editing tools in the Sora app itself within a few weeks / months. 4. There are extremely strict guardrails around generations — more than half my generations got blocked for no clear reason and it’s pretty frustrating. There are a lot of people complaining on Sora itself about it too. 5. OpenAI really knows how to productize. This actually feels like it's likely to become a mass consumer app if they feed creators with the tools to make the content more engaging. The creation is so easy and good, it’s addictive to play with. 6. Can't wait for the API
