X link preview check
When you share a link on X, X's crawler reads the page's meta tags and builds a card: an image, a title and the site's domain. If the tags are missing, too small or blocked, the post shows a bare link instead, and bare links get far fewer clicks. X removed the preview from its own Card Validator in 2022, so the only official check left is pasting the link into the post composer and looking at what appears.
This validator fetches your page the way X's crawler does, reads every twitter: and og: tag, applies X's Open Graph fallbacks and draws the card X would build, as the large image card or the small summary card, in light and dark. It then reads the card image's first bytes to get its real type and size, and checks everything against X's published card rules.
Each problem comes with a fix, usually the exact tag to add or change. The checks cover a missing twitter:card, a missing title, description or image, images under X's minimum size or over 5 MB, unsupported formats such as SVG, relative image URLs, http images on https pages, and redirects.
Methodology
We request the URL once from our server, as a crawler named XholicCardValidator, without cookies or a login, following up to 3 redirects within 5 seconds and reading up to 1 MB of HTML. Only public http and https pages on the standard ports can be checked. Results are saved for 10 minutes per URL.
Every meta tag whose name or property starts with twitter: or og:, in any case. The card uses twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:description, twitter:image and twitter:image:alt first, then og:title, og:description, og:image and og:image:alt. With no twitter:card, Open Graph title and description give a summary card, as X's docs describe.
X's Cards markup reference: title up to 70 characters, description up to 200, image description up to 420, images under 5 MB in JPG, PNG, WEBP or GIF (first frame only), no SVG. Summary images: 1:1, at least 144×144. Large image cards: 2:1, at least 300×157, at most 4096×4096. We recommend 1200×628.
How it works
One check takes a few seconds. Fixing what it finds usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the exact URL you plan to share, with or without https://. Any public page works: your blog, a product page or a landing page.
The preview shows the card X would build, large or small, in light and dark mode, with the domain and title where X puts them.
Every check says pass, warning or fail in words, with what we found: the card type, the title and description lengths, the image's type, size and file size.
Copy the suggested tag into your page's head, deploy, then check again in 10 minutes or with a new URL. X caches cards for about 7 days after a link is posted.
What the validator covers
The same tags, fallbacks and image rules X's crawler uses.
summary_large_image shows a wide image with the title on it; summary shows a square thumbnail beside the title. The preview draws whichever your tags ask for.
X uses og:title, og:description and og:image when the twitter: tags are missing. The validator applies the same fallbacks and shows which tag each value came from.
We read the image file itself, not just the tag, so you see its real format, pixel size and file size, and whether it loads at all.
A table lists every twitter: and og: tag in page order, so duplicates and typos like twitter:image:src stand out.
See each redirect hop, the final URL X lands on and whether the page and image are served over https.
Each warning or failure comes with the tag to add or the size to export, written for whoever edits your site's head.
Use cases
Check before you share, not after the post is live.
Make sure the product page shows a large image card before you post it, since X keeps the first card it builds for about a week.
Themes and SEO plugins often drop or rename card tags. One check shows whether twitter:card and the image survived.
Find out whether the tag is missing, the image is too small, too large, an SVG or blocked from crawlers.
Responsible use
We follow X's published card rules, but X can change how cards look or which tags it reads without notice, and its crawler also respects your robots.txt rules for Twitterbot. Treat the preview as a close match, not a guarantee. Xholic AI is not affiliated with X Corp.
FAQ
Card tags, image sizes and why a link shows no preview.
X removed the preview from its Card Validator in 2022, so it no longer shows how a card looks. This validator fills that gap: it reads your tags the way X's crawler does and draws the card X would build.
At minimum twitter:card (summary_large_image for a big image), a title (twitter:title or og:title) and an image (twitter:image or og:image) with a full https:// URL. Add twitter:description, twitter:image:alt and twitter:site for a complete card.
For summary_large_image, use 1200×628 pixels (about 2:1). X's minimum is 300×157 and its maximum is 4096×4096. For the small summary card, use a square image of at least 144×144. Keep the file under 5 MB as JPG, PNG, WEBP or GIF.
The usual causes are a missing twitter:image or og:image, an image smaller than X's minimum, an SVG, a file over 5 MB, an image behind a login or blocked by robots.txt, or a relative image URL. Run the check and fix whatever fails.
Yes. When a twitter: tag is missing, X falls back to the matching og: tag for the title, description and image. Without twitter:card, X may show a small summary card, so add twitter:card if you want the large image.
X caches a card for about 7 days after a link is first posted. To see the new card sooner, share the URL with a harmless query string such as ?v=2 so X treats it as a new link.
No. Like X's crawler, the validator can only reach public pages. Private networks, localhost, non-standard ports and pages that need a login can't be checked.
Yes. It's free with no login. You can run 20 checks every 10 minutes, and each URL's result is saved for 10 minutes.
