Weighted character count
Count characters exactly the way X counts them
X doesn't count every character as one. Every link counts as 23 no matter how long the URL is, every emoji counts as two, and characters from Chinese, Japanese and Korean count as two. A plain character counter gets these wrong, so a post that looks like 270 characters can be rejected.
This counter uses twitter-text, the open-source library X publishes for exactly this calculation. It shows the weighted length, how many characters remain under the standard 280 limit, and whether the post is valid, all inside your browser.

What is the character limit on X?
280 weighted characters for accounts without Premium. Premium subscribers can publish much longer posts, which this counter doesn't check.
Do links count toward the character limit?
Yes, but every link counts as 23 characters, however long the actual URL is, because X shortens it with t.co.
Do emoji count as two characters?
Most emoji count as two under X's weighting. The counter applies the same rule, so you don't have to work it out.
Do spaces and line breaks count?
Yes. Each space and line break counts as one character.
Is my text saved?
No. The count is calculated in your browser and nothing you type leaves the page.
