Thread unroller

Read a whole X thread as one page

On X, a thread is a chain of posts where the author replies to themself, one post at a time. Reading it in the app means scrolling past other people's replies, ads and "Show more" links, and a post shared on its own often hides the rest of the thread entirely. This Twitter thread reader takes any post from the thread and lays the author's whole chain out as one clean article.

You can paste the first post, the last one or any post in between. The reader walks up to the start of the thread, then follows the author's own replies in order, up to 50 posts. Other people's replies are left out, and so are the author's replies to them, so what you read is exactly what the author wrote as the thread.

Images and video thumbnails stay next to the post they belong to, every post links back to the original on X, and the whole thread copies as plain text or Markdown for notes, docs or a newsletter. Only public threads can be read, because posts from protected accounts aren't public.

Methodology

How we calculate

  1. 01

    Finding the thread

We read the post you pasted, then the posts its author wrote in the same conversation. A thread is the chain of the author's replies to their own posts: we walk up from your post to the first one, then down through each self-reply in order. When the author branched (replied to one of their posts twice), we follow the branch that holds your post, or else the earlier reply.

  2. 02

    Where the posts come from

Posts we've already stored are used first. Anything missing is read from X through our data provider and saved, so the next reader of the same thread gets it straight away. Each thread is kept for an hour, and a thread that has had a day to settle is served from storage without asking X again.

  3. 03

    Limits

Up to 50 posts per thread; longer threads are cut off and say so. Only public posts can be read. Each visitor can read 10 threads every 10 minutes, and when the day's shared allowance for new threads is used up, threads we already have still load and new ones come back after 00:00 UTC.

How it works

How to unroll a Twitter thread

It takes a few seconds, and you don't need to start from the first post.

01

Copy a post's link

On X, tap the share icon under any post in the thread and choose Copy link. Any x.com or twitter.com post link works, or the post's ID.

02

Paste it and press Read thread

The reader finds the start of the thread and the author's posts that follow, in order.

03

Read it your way

Show the posts numbered, as they appeared on X, or as flowing paragraphs, like an article.

04

Copy or open it

Copy the thread as text or Markdown, open any single post, or open the whole thread on X.

What you get

Everything a good thread reader should do

A clean page of the author's own words, and nothing else.

Start from any post

Paste a post from the middle or the end and the reader still starts at the first post.

Only the author's thread

Replies from other people, and the author's replies to them, are left out.

Images in place

Photos and video thumbnails appear under the post they were attached to. Videos play on X.

Numbered or flowing

Switch between numbered posts and flowing paragraphs without loading the thread again.

Copy as text or Markdown

Plain text for notes and messages, Markdown with links and images for docs and newsletters.

A link to every post

Each post links to the original on X, so quoting or replying is one click away.

Use cases

When a thread reader helps

Any time a thread is worth reading properly, or keeping.

01

Read long threads without the noise

Get through a 20-post explainer without replies and ads breaking it up.

02

Save a thread to your notes

Copy it as Markdown into Notion, Obsidian or a doc, with a link back to every post.

03

Study how good threads are built

See the hook, the structure and how each post hands off to the next, all on one screen.

04

Share a thread with people not on X

Send the text, or the link to this page with the thread loaded, to someone without an X account.

Responsible use

Read and share threads fairly

The reader shows public posts exactly as the author wrote them and links every post back to X. Credit the author when you quote or share their thread, and ask before republishing it in full. Protected accounts' posts are never shown. Xholic AI is not affiliated with X Corp.

FAQ

Twitter thread reader FAQ

How unrolling works, what's included and what isn't.

What is a Twitter thread reader?

A thread reader, or thread unroller, takes a thread from X and shows all of its posts together on one page, in order, so you can read it like an article instead of scrolling through replies.

How do I unroll a Twitter thread?

Copy the link to any post in the thread from X's share menu, paste it above and press Read thread. You'll get the author's whole thread from the first post, with images and a link to each post.

Do I have to paste the first post of the thread?

No. Paste any post from the thread. The reader walks back to the first post and reads forward from there.

Are other people's replies included?

No. Only the author's own chain is shown: the posts where they replied to themself. Replies from other people, and the author's replies to those people, are left out.

Can I read threads from protected accounts?

No. Posts from protected accounts are only visible to approved followers, so the reader can't and won't show them.

Do I need an X account to use it?

No. The reader needs no login, no extension and no X account. You only need the link to a post.

How do I save a thread as text or Markdown?

After the thread loads, press Copy as text for plain text, or Copy as Markdown for a version with headings, links to every post and images, ready for Notion, Obsidian or a doc.

Why does it say the thread may be incomplete?

We show what we could read. If X couldn't be reached, the day's shared allowance ran out, or the thread is longer than 50 posts, the page says so. Open the thread on X to see the rest.

Write threads people read to the end

With the Chrome extension, posts you like or bookmark on X land in your Library. Xholic drafts new posts in your voice from them, then schedules the ones you approve for your best hours.
