Check if an X username is taken before you get attached to it
Type a handle and the checker first validates it against X's character rules: no more than 15 characters, using only letters, numbers and underscores. If the format is valid, it looks for a public profile with that name.
If no profile exists, the handle appears available and you can try to claim it on X. If it's taken, you get up to five variations built from your idea, such as adding hq, app or get, to check next.

What are the rules for an X username?
Up to 15 characters, using only letters A–Z, numbers and underscores, with no spaces, dots or hyphens. X asks for at least 5 characters on new usernames, though some older accounts keep shorter ones, and it doesn't allow names containing Twitter or Admin.
Why does X say a handle is taken when this tool says it's available?
The checker can't see suspended, deactivated or reserved accounts, which still hold their usernames. X's settings page has the final say.
Are the suggested alternatives available?
Not necessarily. They're variations of your idea; check each one before using it.
How do I change my Twitter handle?
On X, open Settings, then Your account, Account information and Username. Enter the new handle and save. Your followers and posts stay with the account.
Can I claim an inactive account's username?
Not through this tool. X decides whether inactive usernames are released, and it doesn't offer a public request process for most handles.
