Seed was the only stage where the median VC check got smaller in 2026. Per the latest @PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor, median deal size, 2025 vs. 2026: Seed: $3.4M → $3.0M (-12%) Series A: $13.7M → $17.4M (+27%) Series B: $30.0M → $39.5M (+32%) Series C: $50.5M → $77.0M (+52%) Series D+: $100M → $150M (+50%) Every stage got bigger except seed. Seed prices still went up: the median seed pre-money rose from $16.0M to $18.3M. So a smaller check at a higher price buys about 14% of the company, down from roughly 17.5% last year. A couple of things are driving it: And a record number of startups are raising first rounds. 8,625 first-time financings through Q3 already beats 2021's full-year record.

AI + Debt destroys Getty Images, files for bankruptcy today 4 years after valued at $4.8 Billion in SPAC IPO: Public shareholders get $0. By most measures the business itself was fine: • ~$910M revenue run-rate • 27% adjusted EBITDA margins • 59% of revenue on annual subscriptions • Editorial revenue up 9% last quarter It was the debt and AI churn on consumer side of business that sank it. At June 30: • $2.1B of debt • ~$250M of annualized adjusted EBITDA (Q2 x 4) • $51.6M of cash • Negative $122.6M of free cash flow in Q2 That works out to about 8x leverage on revenue that was down 4% in constant currency. At 8x, the plan only works if everything goes right. Instead: • AI took the low end. Annual subscribers fell from 321K to 240K in a year, a 25% drop. • Subscription revenue retention fell from 93.4% to 88.4%. • The plan to fix the balance sheet was a $3.7B merger with Shutterstock. UK regulators required a sale of Shutterstock's editorial business. Getty walked away in July after spending more than $100M on the deal. Three months later Getty signed the restructuring. The Getty family and Koch are putting in up to $533M and will own 100% of the company. $270M of unsecured notes get retired, and secured lenders get lower rates and longer maturities. 8x leverage can work when revenue is growing 10%. Getty's revenue was shrinking and its retention was falling, and a 27% margin couldn't cover that gap. If you have venture debt or any other loan, track two numbers: debt as a multiple of real cash flow, and what that multiple becomes if AI takes your low end the way it took Getty's.

"Never hire a CRO / VP Sales that doesn't have a few truly great sales execs lined up to follow them. Wherever they go. If they can't intro you to 2-3 top execs ready to jump with them, do not make the hire. The best sales leaders always have at least a few ringers ready to start with them at their next role. Always. Because they're always recruiting."

"How to use Muse for B2B: ask it how to implement any sales or marketing ideas you have that you aren't getting done. It may well be able to figure out how to do it for you. It will run 24x7, it has its own LLMs, its own browser, its own computer. It can probably figure it out for you."

A record number of startups raised their first venture round this year. With a quarter still to go. Per the latest @PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor: → 8,625 first-time VC financings in the US through Q3 2026 → That already beats 2021's full-year record of 8,507 → 2025 nearly matched 2021 too, so this is two near-record years back to back, not a one-year spike → At the current pace, 2026 lands somewhere around 11,500 It's not just first rounds. 5,012 VC deals closed in Q3 alone, the second-most of any quarter on record. Only Q1 2022 had more. But a record deal count doesn't mean the money is spread out. In Q3, deals of $100M+ were 5% of deals but 75% of the dollars. The median seed check actually got smaller this year, from $3.4M to $3.0M.

"Hiring a seasoned CRO / VP Sales can make sense. But you have to make sure they still want to be ... a CRO / VP Sales. That they still want to spend 100% of their time selling. Not being a COO, or President, etc. Not everyone really wants to sell forever."

An agentic tool we use often, we clicked to add their maximum security setting the other day. Seemed like a great idea! 🤷♀️The app then told me that to to upgrade to the max on security ... I had to talk to a human in sales and upgrade to Enterprise to get automated security. This is an app where we already spend thousands a month. To me, this is Not OK. Security shouldn't be an option. Not a world where 1000s of bots and agents attack every website. Upsell something else. Especially after this week.

You could always do vendor bake-offs. We’ve always done them. But a great agent means you can do much better bake-offs, with better data, so much faster. This week we compared email deliverability across 3 vendors and 500,000+ emails at a level of detail we never would have been able to do before. 10K nailed every element, even multivariant test, every issue. And its recommendations were crystal clear.
