Monetization
Estimated X creator earnings
$23–$55 in the last 30 days
From 4.6M views on @fchollet's original posts in the last 30 days.
Rewards eligibility: likely
Rough estimate. X publishes no payout rate, so this assumes about $5–12 per 1M original-post impressions from reported creator payouts. Only Premium viewers’ impressions count, so real payouts can be much lower.

Delegate coding. Never delegate understanding. If code was previously your source of truth for managing understanding, then you need a new source of truth artifact. If code-centric workflows were how you developed that understanding, then you need new workflows.

Arguing that "consciousness arises from a computational substrate, and since AI models are computation, they are likely conscious," is as meaningless as arguing that "living creatures are made of atoms, and since this rock is made of atoms, it is likely alive." Everything is computation. Sometimes incredibly sophisticated computation, like a chess engine, AlphaGo, google3, or the Linux kernel. That does not make it conscious. A rock being made of atoms does not confer it any of the properties we associate with living things, also made of atoms. Likewise a static input-output program that has *none* of the properties we associate with conscious beings (e.g. information integration, interoception, temporal binding, embodiment, etc.) has no more reason to be presumed conscious than a rock has to be presumed alive. Humanity has not yet created a conscious computer program, and there are no signs we are close to doing so. When we get close, the case for machine consciousness will be backed by evidence and corroborated by consciousness science (which is a thing), not by evidence-free wishful thinking and cargo culting.

The tweet below got enormous pushback at the time I posted it, more than 5 years ago. But this prediction is looking obvious by the day now.

The purpose of the AI industry should be to produce tools that, in the human hand, will improve human prosperity and welfare. It should not be to create a "successor species" to the human race. Entertaining such a thought makes you, de facto, the enemy of all present and future humans.

I don't read/write code these days, I only instruct an LRM. But it's not because I think LRM code quality is perfect, or even good. And it's not because I think my instructions are always being perfectly acted upon -- I know they aren't. The thing is: LRMs don't just write your code, they unlock new ways to control what you're doing and maintain understanding of your system, which are about as effective as reading code. You can better test your codebase, you can audit specific components, you can spin up visualizations, you can ask the LRM to red team, etc. You can do all of these things at high speed -- you couldn't before. The benefits of reading/writing code can now be achieved in new ways. All in all, the ROI of writing code by hand is no longer looking good, not because LRMs got perfect but because they're so fast at doing things that you can develop new workflows around them, workflows that end up being more productive than the old workflows.

A very common sentiment I'm hearing among math students: "I don't want to become a mathematician anymore." I've seen this before, I think the generation of digital artists who came of age around 2022 will be the last. AI might not functionally replace mathematicians or artists, but it might well cause their near-extinction anyway, by crushing the spirits of the younger generations.
