Tesla VP of Hardware Engineering Lars Moravy explains to Hagerty how the Roadster borrows SpaceX cold gas thrusters to make 0 to 60 possible in 0.55 seconds. Truly insane: ▫️ 200L carbon-over wrapped pressure vessel behind seat holds nitrogen at 10,000 PSI ▫️cold gas thrusters push out 80 kN of thrust (equivalent to a single fighter jet engine) ▫️Tesla went with nitrogen because “it just seemed wrong to put fuel into a car” (air is ~80% nitrogen, fair enough) ▫️thrusters same system satellites use to move in space (eg. the “psh psh psh" from Apollo 13 film) ▫️currently takes 6 to 7 hours to refill all nitrogen but Tesla working for it to be 30 minutes ▫️uses leg actuators from Optimus robot to manage downforce on wing *** Full 25-min episode with Henry Catchpole here: https://t.co/UOCw1u09w5

Really enjoyed You Can See Everything. Might be most meta documentary ever. No spoilers but will say this interview Christopher Nolan did with Nathan Fielder about his show “The Curse” — explaining his creative process — really comes through in Holmes film: ▫️setting the tone is his top priority, even moreso than narrative (“when you have the tone right, everything falls into place”) ▫️Fielder says he “stumbles into ideas he gets excited about” without a master plan and “just piles things on and it grows” (for the Holmes doc, he had an agreement with A24 to scrap the project even after years of shooting if he didn’t think there was a film) ▫️the musical score is crucial in setting the tone (the sound doesn’t even have to match action on the scene, it can float above just setting mood) ▫️he doesn’t want to rush scenes; let them develop to the point where audience is expecting any action to be consequential and it builds the tension (inspired by old detective TV show Columbo) *** Full interview here (Nolan really is a Fielder Stan): https://t.co/j1RUbAxTaU

Elon showing Jay Leno the first production unit Tesla Roadster in 2008. Leno amazed by battery pack with 6,831 lithium-ion cells and gives this take on his first test drive: “The good thing with electricity is that you get full torque from 0 RPM. In a gas car, you have to bring the revs to 3 or 4 grand and pop the clutch. Most electric cars feel bottom heavy, but not this. It’s eerily quiet. It’s amazing. All you hear is the wind noise. I like that it’s a sports car, not some dorky little 4-door econo-box.” *** Full ep: https://t.co/opj0gv8Yih

Great read from Polina. My main takeaway from “You Can See Everything” was also on Fielder and Oppenheim playing around with documentary/filmmaking techniques to frame narrative and manipulate viewers. Reminded me of Arnold explaining the making of his legendary bodybuilding 1977 doc “Pumping Iron”. In 2002, they did a 25th anniversary retrospective with everyone involved. Basically, Arnold wanted to get into mainstream Hollywood and the documentary was a vehicle help him achieve the goal. It had to create an engaging conflict and make him appear larger than life. While the bodybuilding competition was real, Arnold and the directing team invented the conflict between him and Lou Ferrigno. Good vs. bad. Dark brooding vs. Easy going charismatic. Physical vs. psychological competition. Standard WWE/reality show stuff now but this was Arnold strategizing in mid-70s about how to pivot from bodybuilding to full-blown movie star: "There were certain things that are not true. And…

McDonald’s actually does have best-tasting Coke in the world and here a few reasons: ▫️Coca-Cola ships Coke/Diet Coke syrup to McDonald’s in specially-designed 75 gallon stainless steel containers and pumped directly into store machines. ▫️ Metal preserves taste better than plastic bags, which is how every other customers gets their syrup (Coca-Cola reps are also forbidden from selling syrup at a lower cost than what McDonald’s pays). ▫️Syrup machines frequently tweaked and calibrated to ensure taste is consistently strong since McDonald’s pours drinks with certain amount of ice which dilutes when melts. ▫️McDonald’s has specialized water filtration system at every location (tastes better) and cooling system (drink always consistently same cold temperature and cooler water holds more carbonation aka fizz) Coca-Cola sends employees to do frequent quality checks at McDonald’s locations. The McDonald’s and Coca-Cola partnership dates back to 1955 and goes deep. McDonald’s is the…

Ralph Nader has a wild corporate honey pot story. After he published “Unsafe At Any Speed” — the 1965 book that led to seatbelt laws in 49 states — GM tried discredit him by tapping his phone and having a PI tail him. When nothing came up, they sent a prostitute to seduce him at a Safeway sandwhich counter. He turned her down. Eventually, Nader sued GM for invasion of privacy and settled the case for $425,000.

Apple market cap closed above $5 trillion for the first time today. If you had invested in $1 in 1990, you would have $0 today because your paper hands would have definitely sold during one of its two 80% drawdowns (1991 to 1997 or 2000 to 2003).

The delivery process for ASML EUV is nuts, too: ▫️Each EUV weighs 180 tons ▫️A disassembled EUV takes up to 40 shipping containers ▫️Shipping it (mostly to Asia) takes 20 trucks and 3 Boeing 747s ▫️ASML teams must be on-the-ground to maintain them ▫️The minimum spend to house EUVs is $1B (machine, transportation, ongoing maintenance etc)

Ate at Benihana on weekend. Been reading up on it and super interesting. Does 20%+ operating margins. Great for restaurants. Harvard Business School even did a case study on benefits of hibachi/teppanyaki model: ▫️MAXIMIZE REAL ESTATE: Back kitchen area mostly for prep. Leaves more space for seating in dining area. Grill tables standardized to seat 8. Don’t have to deal with a bunch of different seating set ups. ▫️EFFICIENT TABLE SERVICE: Table service typically begins once 8 people seated. Chefs master the same sequence: rice, vegetables, protein, jokes (and that glorious volcano onion). Less chance of mistakes and table times predictable. When chef is done, leaves grill table, a subtle hint for guests to leave (and turn the table for more customers). A table having to wait to seat 8 before cooking does introduce inefficiencies, though…but, during this time, customers usually asked to hang out at the bar (which sells high margin sushi and drinks). ▫️MENU SIMPLIFICATION:…
